The Firm

An Engineering Practice Built on Precision and Candor

CGM Equity Holdings, LLC was founded to provide enterprise organizations with systems architecture and integration services that combine deep technical expertise with honest, jargon-free advisory.

We started CGM Equity because we saw a gap in the market. On one side, large consultancies with impressive brands but shallow engagement teams — senior partners sell the work, then junior associates deliver it. On the other side, boutique shops with genuine expertise but limited capacity to handle complex, multi-workstream programs. We built CGM Equity to occupy the space between: a firm large enough to field complete engineering teams for substantial engagements, but disciplined enough to ensure every architect and engineer on your project has proven, hands-on expertise.

Our headquarters is located at 2554 N Geranium Drive in Saratoga Springs, Utah. From this base, we serve organizations across the United States — professional services firms, scientific research institutions, technical consulting practices, specialized design studios, and other organizations within the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services sector. While our physical presence is in Utah, our client engagements span the country, supported by secure remote collaboration infrastructure that we designed and operate ourselves.

The firm is structured around a simple premise: hire the best engineers, give them challenging problems, support them with strong methodology, and never compromise on the quality of the deliverable. We do not have a sales department. Every new client relationship begins with a technical conversation between a prospective client and one of our senior architects. If there is a genuine fit between your needs and our capabilities, we proceed to a structured engagement. If not, we will tell you directly and may recommend alternative approaches or firms.

I. Engineering Principles

Design for Failure

Every system component will eventually fail. We design with this assumption from the start, building redundancy, graceful degradation, and automated recovery into every architecture. The question is not whether something will break, but whether the system survives when it does.

Make Trade-offs Explicit

There is no perfect architecture — only architectures optimized for specific priorities. We document every trade-off decision: the options considered, the rationale for the chosen approach, and the implications for cost, performance, security, and operational complexity.

Infrastructure as Code, Always

Manual configuration is the enemy of reliability. Every piece of infrastructure we design is defined, provisioned, and managed through version-controlled code. This ensures reproducibility, enables peer review, and makes disaster recovery a deterministic process.

Security from Architecture, Not Appliances

Security is a property of the architecture, not a feature added by deploying security products. We design security controls into the system fabric — network segmentation, identity boundaries, encryption at rest and in transit, and audit logging as a first-class concern.

Observability Is Not Optional

A system that cannot be observed cannot be operated reliably. Every architecture we produce includes a comprehensive observability design covering metrics, structured logging, distributed tracing, and alerting with defined runbooks for common failure modes.

Transfer Knowledge, Do Not Hoard It

Our goal is to leave your team stronger than we found them. Throughout every engagement, we document decisions, share context, and train your engineers on the systems we build together. When our engagement concludes, your team should be fully equipped to operate and extend the system independently.

II. Practice Leadership

Our practice is led by senior engineers who remain hands-on with client work. We do not maintain a layer of non-technical management between our architects and our clients. The person leading your engagement will be someone who has designed and delivered production systems and who can speak with authority about every aspect of the architecture.

III. Sectors of Practice

We focus our practice on the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services sector — a broad category that includes computer systems design firms, scientific research and development organizations, legal and accounting practices, architectural and engineering firms, management and technical consulting practices, specialized design services, and advertising and public relations agencies. Within this sector, we bring specialized knowledge of the regulatory, operational, and technology patterns that distinguish each sub-sector.

This focused approach means we are not generalists trying to serve every industry. We understand the specific challenges of organizations where intellectual capital is the primary asset, where client confidentiality is paramount, and where systems reliability directly affects professional reputation. When we design a document management architecture for a law firm, we understand the implications of legal hold requirements. When we build a research data platform for a scientific institution, we understand the data governance requirements of grant-funded research. This domain awareness produces better architectures, faster.

If you have read this far, you likely share our view that systems architecture is a discipline that rewards rigor, honesty, and deep technical competence. You are probably not looking for a firm that promises to solve every problem with a proprietary methodology or a magic platform. You are looking for engineers who will engage seriously with your specific challenges, propose architectures that make sense for your context, and then deliver what they designed.

That is exactly what we do. If it sounds like what you need, we should talk.
